Staff with Camper Fishing

Pemi's Facilities

The character and experience of the Pemi staff are of the highest order. When we select our counselors we are more interested in the quality of our people than whether they are simply talented in a given area. All staff are qualified teachers, instructors and coaches, but we choose staff for who they are, not what they do. The counseling and support staff is a large one, ensuring a four to one supervision ratio. In addition to cabin counselors and assistant counselors, who also instruct activities and coach, there are specialists in nature, music, arts, sailing and several other sports who spend their entire time instructing and supervising in their activity areas.

A great deal of time and thought is given to the selection and training of staff members. Character, a solid background, a love for working with young people, enthusiasm for their interest areas, and an intelligent attitude toward education are essentials. Many of the staff are college graduates with years of camping experience, while others are still in college. Cabin counselors must have completed at least their first year of college to serve in that capacity. A majority of the staff are former campers, and the average staff member has over six years of experience at Pemi. Counselors represent many different universities, and every year we have several international staff members.

All staff members receive a week of extensive training prior to camp, including health and safety, teaching and supervision strategies, and briefing on the particular characteristics and needs of camp-age boys.
