Pemi staff members are qualified teachers, instructors, and coaches, though when we select our staff we are more interested in the quality of our people than whether they are simply talented in a given area. Character, a solid and trustworthy background, a love for working with young people, enthusiasm for their interest areas, and an intelligent attitude toward education are essentials. The large counseling and support staff ensures a one-to-three staff-to-camper supervision ratio. Cabin counselors and assistant counselors instruct activities and coach, while specialists in nature, music, arts, and sports spend their entire time instructing and supervising in their activity areas.
Many staff members are college graduates with years of camping experience, while others are still in college. Cabin counselors must have completed at least their first year of college or be 19 or older with equivalent experience to serve in that capacity. A majority of the staff are former campers, and the average staff member has over six years of experience at Pemi. Counselors represent many different universities, and every year we have several international counselors.
All staff members receive twelve days of extensive training prior to camp, including certification in CPR and Wilderness First Aid, teaching and supervision strategies, and briefing on the particular characteristics and needs of camp-age boys.
