Sunday Meetings

Every Sunday evening at Pemi, following our weekly camp-wide barbecue, Pemi boys and staff members clean up, polish up, and dress up for the Sunday Meeting, to which they are called by bugle at 8:00. Assembling in the Lodge, the entire population of camp gathers to absorb a mixture of provocative philosophical reflections, inspiring advice, and beautiful live music. In recent years, the themes of these gatherings have included the history of Camp Pemi, invitations to travel and experience different cultures, challenges to take advantage of new opportunities available at camp, considerations of our relationship with the natural world around us, and musings upon the value of membership in small communities and on athletic teams. Generally, the directors and middle managers lead these Sunday gatherings, including Tom Reed, Sr., whose recent reflections on various aspects of music history have broadened the scope of many a camper's and counselor's appreciation of classical music. In recent years, too, several 15-year-old Seniors have shared their reflections upon their experiences at Pemi, urging their younger peers to discover and develop their latent talents and interests by immersing themselves fully in the camp program. We value these weekly convocations as opportunities to congregate and meditate upon some of the deeper, more central reasons why we spend our summers together at Pemi.
